Post subject: Cannot program the nano 28 with nano usb serial adapter
PostPosted: Sat Aug 08, 2009 11:15 pm
I must be totally inept!! I cannot get the nano to program using the nano usb serial adapter. I must be wiring it wrong, but I cannot find my mistake. Is there a
photo of a breadboard set up you can send me to check my setup?

Thanks

Hello. Here is the data sheet address for the programmer you have:
http://basicmicro.com/downloads/datasheets/B0083.pdf
This shows a connection to a BasicAtom Nano40, but the idea is the same. Get the data sheet for your Nano, find the RES and SER pins and connect them as shown in this sheet.
Another possible problem is missing drivers. The drivers for the USB communications are at:
http://basicmicro.com/ViewPage.aspx?ContentCode=d_development_boards
Look for the drivers download at the top of the selections. After you unzip it, start "DPInst.exe". Windows will squawk at a few points about certification, or lack thereof. Just tell it to continue. When you plug in the programmer Windows will find and install the driver(s) the first time. You're done! Program away.
And have fun doing it!

Exactly what have you done so far? Did you do the unzip OK? Does it fail to start? Describe what you have done so far so I can figure where the problem is. Also, describe your computer and say which operating system you are using. Then we'll figure out the problem from there.

Ken,

Here goes.

I have a dell dimension using Windows XP SP3.

The zip file downloaded and extracted with no issues. When I go to run the DSinst.exe (double click-file open-whatever I try, nothing runs.

Scratching my head,

Right you are. I have three PCs, one of which hadn't received the drivers yet. I downloaded the file, it unzipped OK, but it failed to go beyond the second installation window. It said it couldn't work on the machine, but this is XP Pro, and the two previous units had XP also. I sneaker netted a previous version from a month or two ago to this unit. I then tried to install this a couple different ways. No joy. What finally DID work was to plug in the development board. XP saw it and installed the driver.

So try plugging in the board after you have extracted the files to the PC and see if that does the job. If not, I'll send you the older version.

I'm trying to send a file to you showing my error message but I can't!!

The drivers loaded as you said.

I tried to hook up my circuit and program again. Now I get a message saying "Atom has to be connected to compile/program/debug".

I set communication to all possible selections and no-go.

Sooo...back to my original question.

I created a diagram showing how to wire the Nano Programmer to a Nano28. See if that helps. It is attached.

Thanks for the circuit. It's built, but now I'm getting this error message that says,
"ATOM must be connected to ..."

I've tried to connect a copy of the screen capture, but I keep loosing all of my message and the file never uploads.

I tried SER 1,3,&4. (the only options available). I cannot connect.

Thanks,

Frustrated.

Hello. Sounds like my idea of Hell.
Open the Control panel and look at the LPT/COM section. Leave this info up while installing and removing the USB cable. When you plug in the cable, a new COM# will appear. Jot that down. Then remove the cable and see if that COM# now disappears. That's the COM# you use to program and communicate with using SEROUT / SERIN.
Hope that helps.

I had the same problem until I downloaded the drivers from FTDI, then configured as per the Basic Micro data sheet on the USB programmer. I downloaded and installed these drivers: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM ... tified.zip

I'm running XP SP2...

I'm about to give up and send this thing back!

I tried both kenjj and scottf suggestions. I still get no connection.

I have com ports set to COM4 as the devise indicates. At least the compile works properly now, BUT I still cannot connect to the usb. I click on find device and there is nothing indicated (detected) on COM4.

Would someone be able to contact me one night and talk me through troubleshooting this thing?

I PM'ed you and left my phone number, day and time to call me. I waited an hour, but no call.
Send it back. Leave an email at sales@basicmicro.com and get the ball rolling.

Please follow this thread.

I have only been able to get my usb to program my nano 28 ONCE.

The computer does not recognize the drivers unless I run the DPinst program. It assigns comm4. I hooked up the circuit pictured in the thread. I cannot get it to work.

I have upgraded to Windows 7. I had XP. Is there a driver upgrade.

The BM software gives me a processor not found error. When I use preferences to find the processor, it finds none.

HELP!

Do you mean your adapter disappears from your PC and you have to re-run DPinst to get the drivers installed, or do you mean you had to run it once to install the drivers(that is the normal way you have to install it)?

Which version of windows 7(32bit or 64 bit)?

If the adapter isn't installed correctly Studio won't be able to find the chip. Are you using one of our boards, or did you wire up a breadboad? If the latter please descibe your wiring.
