I spent many fruitless hours trying to get my Nano18 to communicate with my old Dell laptop computer. There is a lot of mis-information both in the documentation and in various forums and places on the Internet. In particular, the Nano documentation fails to say that a data level translation chip is required and it does not show one in the diagrams for programming. The most common chip is the Maxim MAX232 or equivalent.
There are diagrams out there that show the 232 chip BUT have incorrect pin numbers, showing TX wired to Outputs and vice versa.
The attached diagram WORKS. Please save yourself time and use this hard won information. Oh, the 10uF cap on the power line is important too.
