I'm using the the Roboclaw, mentioned in the topic, to control two engines from a computer which is interfaced with the USB port.

The problem I'm having is that ever so often I get a Writetimeout exception thrown. This makes it impossible to talk with the motors and isn't to much fun when they are running full speed at the time.

I'm using the python code example given at the page of the Roboclaw.

Timeout isn't given at a certain value, but it hasn't happened when sending commands that are not motor related.

Does your board have firmware version4 or newer? If so download and update the firmware: http://downloads.orionrobotics.com/down ... Motion.zip

If it is older than 4.0 you will need to send it in. The new firmware may fix the problem you are having but in general that problem is caused by noise. Once the USB connection fails on windows it can't be recovered without physically removing and replugging the cable(atleast I've found no way so far). If it is noise then you can try running the logic power separate from the main battery power. Another option is to use a USB to serial adapter and use the TTL serial connections instead of USB on the roboclaw. This usually isolates the roboclaw from the PC USB which is sensitive to noise.
